It’s fair to say that reusing and recycling gets increasingly confusing, complicated and involved as we seek ways to lessen what goes to incineration and landfill, the two last (and worst) resorts for those things in our households that are no longer needed.
The aim of this page (a work in progress) is to try to summarise and simplify as much as possible the what, how and where of reusing and recycling.
For Facebook links, it’s not necessary to login after following a link, just click the X in the top right of the login box to view the pages below.
Recycle
- Blue Bin – glass, tin, plastic containers, textiles, electricals/batteries
- Brown Bin – general garden waste
- Household Recycling Centre – the “tip” takes many items, although not everything is recycled
- Roots Larder – cartons, oral care, beauty products, wrappers, mailing bags, spectacles and many more; Roots raise money for charity for what they collect
- Tesco, Sainsburys – virtually all soft plastics eg film, wrappers, pet food pouches
- Superdrug – empty medicine/tablet packets (blister packs)
- In addition there is a small bin outside Elm Lodge in the village, for cartons and paper cups, which are regularly taken to Roots Larder
- The village hall also has a blue bin for recyclable materials (there are two normal bins at the play area and by the noticeboard, which frequently have lots of recyclable items in them)
Repair
Once upon a time pretty much everybody would “make do and mend”, a mindset that very much fell out of fashion but is now returning.
Reuse
- Freegle and Stafford Freegle on Facebook. There are some Freegle users who are interested in fixing too.
- Charities, eg House of Bread (food, clothes, toiletries), Katharine House (furniture, house clearance, most household items, clothes etc considered) – and of course many others in town
- Marketplaces (ebay, Vinted, Facebook Marketplace etc)
